Avocados might be the most nutritious fruits out there, but they’re also super fragile. The good part is that their flavor doesn’t change much once they are frozen. It’s how you freeze them that makes all the difference. You can freeze the avocados for as long as 4 months. Anything beyond that will cause ice crystals to form, which can separate the pit from the skin and flesh of the fruit, eventually causing it to darken. However, this doesn’t mean that your entire frozen avocado is ruined; just cut out any ice or dark areas before eating it.
Can I freeze a whole avocado?
Yes, you definitely can! In fact, one of the four methods I’ve outlined below has the step-by-step process for just that! It is actually pretty easy.

- You can whip up delicious spreads and dressings using the frozen avocados in a jiffy.
- If you find a good deal on avocados, you can stock up on them and save money.
Depending on how you’re planning to freeze the avocados, you might want to spend some time prepping. Use a clean chopping board and knife if you’re planning to chop them up, and always start by cutting a whole avocado into half, removing the pit, and then peeling it.
Ideally, you will want to look out for an unripe avocado that isn’t too firm or too soft. Unripe avocados are difficult to cut into so it’s best to go for one that has just started to give when gently pressed.
If you’re planning to freeze ripe avocados, remember that they should be soft but not mushy.
Ripe avocados are usually dark green in color. If you spot an avocado that is pale green, it’s just not ripe yet, and if it’s bright green, chances are, the fruit was picked before it was ready to be eaten. It can still taste okay but it is best to use it in baked goods.
The rule of thumb is that if they are frozen individually, then 30 minutes before use will be enough time to thaw them out. All you will need to do is place them in a bowl of cold water and you’re sorted. If they are frozen as a whole, you might want to leave them to defrost in the fridge for 1-2 hours.
If you have any leftover bits of avocado flesh, you can also store them together in one bag/container/wrapped up in cling film!
Method #1: Freeze Avocados Whole
- Wrap avocados in plastic wrap to lock in some freshness.
- Place wrapped avocados into labeled ziplock freezer bag.
- Seal bag, removing as much air as possible, and store in freezer for 3-6 months.
Method #2: Freeze Avocado Halves
- Cup avocados in halves. (You can leave the pit or remove it, up to you)
- Brush each half with lemon juice to prevent browning on avocados.
- Wrap avocado halves in plastic wrap to lock in some freshness.
- Place wrapped avocados into labeled ziplock freezer bags.
- Seal bag, removing as much air as possible, and store in freezer for 3-6 months
Method #3: Freeze Avocados Sliced/Diced
- Cut avocado up into preferred size. You can slice or dice the avocado.
- Mix in some lemon juice with your avocado slices.
- Cover a baking sheet (with a lip) with parchment paper and place your avocado slices onto baking sheet.
- Freeze avocado slices for 1-2 hours.
- Transfer frozen avocado slices into a freezer bag. Once avocado slices are in a freezer bag remove as much air as possible and seal.
Method #4: Freeze Avocado Mash
- Cut up fresh ripe avocado and place into a bowl. (Make sure your avocados are very ripe if using this method.)
- Mash avocado with a fork or in a food processor.
- Store portioned out avocado mash in quart sized freezer bags, TIP: you can even freeze in silicone trays for smaller portions of avocado mash.

- A quick tip to prevent browning of the avocados before and after they’re frozen is to spray them with a little lemon juice. You can just pour a little lemon juice in a spray bottle and spritz a bit on the freshly cut avocados.
- Don’t want to freeze avocados just like that? Whip up a quick batch of guacamole and freeze it for later.
- If you’re freezing the avocados in zip loc bags, try to remove as much air as you can from the bag before you pop it in the freezer. A quick and easy way to do that is to use a straw to suck out all the air and vacuum seal the bag!
