5 Reasons you should buy Organic Spices in Bulk

I wish I could afford to buy everything organic but it is just not in the budget right now. Surprisingly with spices its totally affordable, keep reading to find out 5 reasons you should buy organic spices in bulk.

Organic spices are completely worth buying! I am excited to share with you a way you can do it for a very low cost and why I decided to start buying ONLY organic spices.

Spices may seem like one of those things that can be bought cheap or expensive and its all the same. I mean garlic powder is garlic powder….??? Or is it…

Why can I buy garlic powder cheap for $1.00 or go expensive for $6.00?

Unfortunately, the answer is fillers. Different companies will actually add in fillers and “natural flavorings” to bring the cost of the ingredient down so they can sell low and make a higher profit.

You lose out in this case. Because of what you are introducing unknowingly into your body.

So whats the answer? Organic spices!

Here are 5 reasons you should buy organic spices in bulk!

1. Organic spices are pure.

Organic spices are free from fillers and “natural flavorings”.

You may have seen the ingredient natural flavorings before. Did you see the term natural and think oh that’s probably good? It says natural, that’s a “healthy” word. That’s what I thought years ago before I tried to find out what “natural flavorings” really meant.

The term natural flavor or natural flavoring means the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional.

According to the code of federal regulations as of April 2019 this is what qualifies as “natural flavorings” Sec. 501.22(3).

Here is a link to the code of federal regulations if you want to know more.

In simpler terms, spices can consist of fillers such as mold, exctreta (aka poop), dead insects, rat hairs, sawdust, and other tiny particles. All of which fit into the above regulations. And spices have been found to consist of up to 20% of these ingredients!

But are organic spices affordable? YES! Continue reading to find out how.

2. Organic spices are affordable if purchased in bulk.

Ok now that I showed you the truth behind many spices let me show you the fun part!

That YOU can afford to purchase organic spices. I shop for my bulk spices at whole foods. They label their bulk spice prices by the pound. Which at first seems way more expensive! But its not. Lets me show you why.

For example Organic Garlic Powder at my local whole foods costs $15.99 per pound. Now hold on! That means it is $0.99 per oz. Which is actually way cheaper then organic spices sold in jars.

Lets compare garlic powder costs with a common organic brand spice in the chart below:

Organic Garlic Powder Brand Amount Final Cost
Jar Cost ($1.51 per oz) Simply Organic 3.64 oz $5.49
Bulk Cost ($0.99 per oz) Whole Foods Bulk 3.64 oz $3.60
  SAVING YOU $1.89

You just saved $1.89 buying the exact same ingredient! Both organic! Again this may seem small but when we are talking about buying 4 or 5 different spices the savings begin to really add up!

3. Buying in bulk allows you to buy what you need!

Have you ever bought a whole jar of a new spice when you only need a ½ tsp? Does that jar end up going to waste or being used?

The first time I tried cooking a curry recipe I was nervous about buying new spices like turmeric, curry powder and garam masala.

Purchasing only what I needed was the perfect option!

If you want to purchase a small amount (lets say 3 tsp which is 0.5 oz) for a new recipe then here is the cost breakdown:

Organic Tumeric Brand Amount Final Cost
Jar Cost ($2.83 per oz) 365 Everyday Value 1.4 oz $3.99
Bulk Cost ($0.93 per oz) Whole Foods Bulk 0.5 oz $0.47
  SAVING YOU $3.52

Here is another table showing you a how much you would save if purchasing the same amount as is sold in the jar:

Organic Turmeric Brand Amount Final Cost
Jar Cost ($2.83 per oz) 365 Everyday Value 1.4 oz $3.99
Bulk Cost ($0.93 per oz) Whole Foods Bulk 1.4 oz $1.31
  SAVING YOU $2.68

Either way you save!

Now these savings may seem small but imagine you are buying 4 or 5 different spices. That’s when spice cost can really add up fast. Bulk allows you to buy many spices at a low cost!

4. You will use less because organic spices are full of flavor.

SO MUCH FLAVOR! Less spice is needed because there is not filler in organic spices.

So enjoy using less and getting more flavor!

If you’re not used to using organic spices and add a lot of extra spice to your meals be careful! What you normally add may overpower the meal. Start slow and taste your food as you go!

I tend to season heavy so I had to rework some of my regular recipes that I used to add extra spice too.

5. Organic Spices can be décor.

I literally open my spice cabinet and smile. I wish I had open shelving in my kitchen because I would love to display my spices. So many different colors and I love knowing and seeing the freshness of each one!

This may be a superficial item but its something small that makes me feel good about how I cook for my family.
